Balmont was a precocious 2-y-o who won his maiden at Doncaster by 3 lengths and followed up with a stunning 12 length victory over 6f at Newmarket - both in July. In a vintage year he was rated superior by Timeform Annual at 2 Bachelor Duke, Haafhd, Diamond Green, Kheleyf, Pearl Of Love, Majestic Missile, Chineur, Byron, Pastoral Pursuits, Azamour and Antonius Pius.
